Review: This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers
It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self.
To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live.
But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside.
When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?
THIS IS NOT A TEST is a gritty and ruthless zombie YA that will leave you thinking long into the night. There wasn’t anything I could do to keep from getting completely absorbed in this bleak world. I won’t lie, the “happy” moments are few and far in between. However, if you’re looking for a well-written novel that will get your mind spinning and your heart racing, THIS IS NOT A TEST is the book for you.
Alina is one of the most distraught and depressed heroines that I have ever read about. I could definitely understand how she had gotten to such a dark place that she was willing to do anything to get away from the world. Never have I felt at such a loss for a character in a book. This girl doesn’t have anything to live for, and I just hoped for some semblance of happiness for her, no matter how small.
The world that Summers has created is gruesome. If the world ever got that bad, I honestly don’t know what I would do. How do you keep living when the world around you is dead? Summers raises some serious questions and also brings up the issues of what humans would do in such a horrific situations: bound together or fight until there’s nothing left?
THIS IS NOT A TEST did some serious damage to me, but in a good way. This is such a remarkably well-written book that you will easily be swept away into Summers’ world and not be able to get away long after closing the book.
