(the super-country that was once Mexico, the U.S., and Canada), Alenna learned at an early age to blend in and be quiet—having your parents taken by the police will do that to a girl. But Alenna can’t help but stand out when she fails a test that all sixteen-year-olds have to take: The test says she has a high capacity for brutal violence, and so she is sent to The Wheel, an island where all would-be criminals end up.

The life expectancy of prisoners on The Wheel is just two years, but with dirty, violent, and chaotic conditions, the time seems a lot longer as Alenna is forced to deal with civil wars for land ownership and machines that snatch kids out of their makeshift homes. Desperate, she and the other prisoners concoct a potentially fatal plan to flee the island. Survival may seem impossible, but Alenna is determined to achieve it anyway.

Sera 198x300 New YA Book Releases: July 10, 2012Seraphina by Rachel Hartman
Random House

Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

In her exquisitely written fantasy debut, Rachel Hartman creates a rich, complex, and utterly original world. Seraphina’s tortuous journey to self-acceptance is one readers will remember long after they’ve turned the final page.

  1. Too many great releases! I am seriously regretting my book buying ban….

    Thanks for posting :)

  2. There are so many new and upcoming releases! I’m excited for all of them!

  3. Summer Crane says:

I have to be honest but these books don’t interest me at all. They all looks too dull and boring, and even cliche, like I’ve read it before and can already know the whole story just by looking at the summary.

P.S. I definitely WILL NOT read a book about sexy vampires that has been written by R.L Stine. That’s just….creepy.
I hope the releases for August will be far better.

  4. The Forsaken, Insignia and Seraphina are actually on my TBR pile and I’m sooo looking forward to reading them! The others, though, do not seem to fit my taste … but who knows, sometimes a book surprises you. :)
