Teen Publisher Extravaganza: Author Interview with Cate Tiernan
Cate Tiernan is here as part of the Teen Publisher Extravaganza week for Little, Brown with a great interview!
In a series, you simply have more space and time to develop your characters. You get to know them better and better–series usually take years to complete, so you get to really dig into their personalities and explore them. Plus you have the time to develop secondary characters and secondary subplots, which is always fun.
I have accepted that I do not have the same eye as an art director or marketing director, who are the people who create the covers. I always have my own ideas, and they’re never even close to what a publisher comes up with. Fortunately, that’s not my job. I did love the hardback cover of Immortal Beloved in the UK, done by Hodder and Stoughton. To me it was exactly indicative of the story. But they’ve just changed it because it might not be eye-catching enough. So there you go.
Oh, fun question! I would love to do a fairy-tale retelling. So many of them have already been done. I’ve always liked the story of Donkey-Skin.
The hardest part is actually coming up with ideas and crafting the story. Writing is easier; crafting is harder. It takes a lot of thought and a lot of work. The best part is being able to tell stories that I would have love to read when I was younger, making work I’m proud of and that touches people and makes a difference in their lives. The way other writers have touched me and made a difference in my life.
In my mind, I don’t think of it as over! I know what happens to Reyn and Nastasya after book three ends; I can foresee a whole future about them. And maybe someday I’ll write it down . . .
After 450 years of living, Nastasya Crowe should have more of a handle on this whole immortal thing…. After a deadly confrontation at the end of Darkness Falls, the second Immortal Beloved novel, Nastasya Crowe is, as she would put it, so over the drama. She fights back against the dark immortals with her own brand of kick-butt magick…but can she fight against true love? In the satisfying finale to the Immortal Beloved trilogy, ex-party-girl immortal Nastasya ends a 450-year-old feud and learns what “eternally yours” really means. Laced with historical flashbacks and laugh-out-loud dialogue, the Immortal Beloved trilogy is a fascinating and unique take on what it would mean to live forever.
