Blood and Starlight: Laini Taylor Book Signing
Laini Taylor’s event at Changing Hands wrapped up what will probably be my last YA book signing til next year. She is the cutest author! With her pink hair that fits her perfectly and her quiet and sweet personality, she made the event a hit!
Thanks to Faye at Little, Brown, I had the opportunity to do a video interview with Laini before the event. It was a whole lot of fun! Look for it at the bottom of the post if you are interested.
After the interview, my mom and I waited for a bit for the signing to start and got our raffle tickets for the special Daughter of Smoke and Bone jewelry line that was to be drawn at the end. These pieces are so pretty and perfectly fit the book. The two pieces being raffled off were a tooth necklace and a snake vertebrae bracelet. I’m pretty sure the whole crowd was beyond excited about them!
Then it was time for Laini to come out and do her Q&A and reading. She started off by talking about Daughter of Smoke and Bone and how the book came to be. It was actually one of what she calls the “slutty new ideas” that come to an author when they are supposed to be writing another book. In this idea, she saw a teenage blue haired girl arguing with her monster-like father. It was one of the few scenarios when the characters have come to her before the plot. She gave herself one fun day to go with this new idea and it just took off. She finished it in one whole month! I’m sure readers are all glad that she didn’t ignore the “slutty new idea”.
According to Laini, Days of Blood and Starlight is very different from the first book. Instead of romance being the main focus, there is a war in this one. She was really afraid that it would be too dark, but she tried to make it fun for herself as a writer and for the readers. She said Mik and Zuzana really helped make it a lighter book than it would have been without them.
Days of Blood and Starlight took Laini a long time to write. She didn’t finish it until June of this year! Apparently her three year old daughter was always telling her to “Finish the book!” Somehow after a while her daughter turned it into “Finish the ham!” Laini has no idea how she came up with that one but that it has become a little joke in her family.
At the end of the Q&A, it was announced that my mom had one of the winning tickets for the jewelry so we got the snake vertebrae bracelet! It is so gorgeous!
Then came the signing where I got to chat with Laini a bit more before saying goodbye. As I was getting ready to leave, I actually ran into Suzanne Young who was there for Laini! She is just so adorable and sweet! We got to talk about her books for a bit and she definitely has me excited with a few of her upcoming projects!!
Laini Taylor’s book signing was a lot of fun and I am so glad that I got the chance to interview her, too! Here is the video:
But wait, there’s more! I have a signed copy of Days of Blood and Starlight to give away to one lucky blog reader. You must be 13 years or older to enter and live in the U.S. Fill out the rafflecopter form below to enter.
