Get Real: Contemps on Tour Recap
Thanks to Changing Hands and Sourcebooks, I got to attend another huge author event this past week in Arizona. I’ve been looking forward to this tour ever since I heard about it at ALA in June. Miranda Kenneally, Janet Gurtler, and Lisa and Laura Roecker are all such sweet ladies and fantastic writers to boot, so I couldn’t wait to see them again and get to spend more time chatting.
Before the event, the authors and I went to one of my favorite local pizza places for a nice relaxing dinner. These girls had me giggling non-stop! They all have bonded throughout the tour so it was fun to hear their tour adventures they’ve been on together, and even get a little insight into their lives as teens. Lisa and Laura were definitely a hoot together. These sisters have A LOT to tell.
After dinner was over, we all went to the signing together and I was able to do a video interview, which will be at the end of this blog post. I’m not sure how it happened, but somehow we got Miranda to read from Fifty Shades of Grey at the end of the interview. Lisa was generous enough to pick a “great” scene for Miranda, who has never actually read the series and I don’t think she will ever now.
Then it was time for the signing to begin! The lovely Robyn who helps with Children and Teen author signings got the authors started with some interesting questions. They are all super passionate about writing and really got the crowd engaged.
One of the questions asked was why they write contemporary. Janet says she writes contemporary books to speak to the real issues people are dealing with and give hope to teens that may feel like they are the only ones facing a certain situation. Lisa and Laura say they write it because they want to write the kind of books that they liked to read when they were younger. Their heroine is who they wished they could’ve been like. Miranda writes YA contemporary because when she was 18 she decided to go to a school in Washington DC and when she told the guidance counselor about it, he told her she couldn’t do it because she would never succeed. Ever since then she has written YA to give kids hope and show them that they can do whatever they want no matter what other people say.
The Q&A was extremely insightful and one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. After the Q&A, the authors signed books and chatted with their fans. They really love their readers!! We all went out for ice cream after with two other bloggers, Vania and Georgia, which was probably one of the highlights of the night. I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time!!!
Then the night was over and it was time for me to go home and get ready to make the long drive back to school in the morning. I had one amazing time at the Get Real event at Changing Hands!
Here is the video interview of all the authors:
*BONUS* We somehow got Miranda to read an excerpt from Fifty Shades of Grey (which she has never read before). Enjoy.
