Review: Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
August 14, 2012
Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.
Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby wants—and needs—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.
BEAUTIFUL DISASTER is a harsh yet irresistible and addictive read that will have your heart beating out of your chest. McGuire bursts out on the scene to create a memorable new adult book. While readers may have a few misgivings due to the intense nature of Travis, I couldn’t help but fall in love with him like Abby did. Beautiful Disaster is most certainly not for everyone and I would recommend it to those who like their romances intense and aren’t afraid to read about difficult subjects.
Abby really made me like her right from the start. She is honest about who she is and will not put up with crap from anyone. Travis takes her on a wild ride that changes her perspective on everything when she’s around him. Their relationship is one of the most raw and realistic things that I have ever read about. That being said, their strong bond of friendship they develop in the beginning really makes their love story even better and it wouldn’t have been the same if they had just jumped right into everything upon their first meeting.
Travis is basically one of the most indescribable boys that I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. He brings love and feelings to a whole other level. He loves just like he fights, with all his being. Travis is not at all easy to deal with, but Abby meets him head on. I’m not sure anyone but Abby could go head to head with Travis! She knows exactly how to calm him down but also how to rile him up. Travis’ explosive personality makes the book and while I wanted to hit him upside the head quite a few times, I understood his motivations as best as anyone can ever understand this boy.
I went through so many different emotions as I was reading BEAUTIFUL DISASTER. It deals with one of the most difficult relationships that I have ever read about, but I was hypnotized. Words cannot describe how excited I am to read WALKING DISASTER, which is told from Travis’ perspective. I’m sure he has just as much to tell as Abby, if not more!
