1. What made you decide that you wanted to write a YA romance about golf?

The idea for HOOKED came to me a few years ago as I was driving down Pecos Road, a long stretch of desolate road near my home in Phoenix, Arizona, which borders the Gila River Indian Community.  I was semi-gazing through the windshield at the wide-open desert (and driving too, of course) and I got this clear image of a Native American girl.  She was waving a golf club at me.  Weird, I know, but the story sprouted from there.  Fortunately I did not swerve off the road.

2. Does Fred have any pieces of you in her?

Fred is shy and quiet and I can definitely relate to that; however, her shyness is not a sign of weakness. She’s also very driven and maybe even somewhat of a perfectionist.  She was way more driven than I was at her age.

3. Ryan is a pretty complicated guy and is definitely not at all perfect. That being said, he also has these super sweet and light moments with Fred when he gets to know her. How did you find a balance between the opposing qualities in his character?

I like imperfect teen boys in YA who learn by making stupid mistakes because I believe that is reflective of real life.  While Ryan and Fred are very much opposites, with different life experiences, they have similarities in the things that matter like compassion and forgiveness and that is what gives them balance.

4. What makes Ryan and Fred work together with them being so different from each other?

In addition to an attraction, they learn to respect each other. Through respect and understanding, they realize that maybe they aren’t so different after all.

5. What was the hardest thing about writing Hooked?

Ensuring Fred’s authenticity as a Gila River teenager.  I had a number of Native American friends beta-read my story.  I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t portraying anything or anyone in an inaccurate or insensitive light.

6. What’s next for you?

I have another YA contemporary that is currently with my agent that I hope to be able to talk about soon.  I’m also in the middle of doing research for another YA contemporary involving a Hopi Indian girl which will require a lot more research and a trip to Hopi Land this spring, and I’m really stoked about that.

7. And the last, most important question: The zombie apocalypse is coming and you have to choose one character from Hooked to help you survive it. Who would it be and why?

That’s easy: Sam Tracy. I have a total fictional crush on him.  He has unrivaled survival skills plus he’s adorable and smart. My kinda guy.

Thank you so much for stopping by, Liz! icon smile Author Interview: Liz Fichera

Hooked 186x300 Author Interview: Liz FicheraAbout Hooked:

When Native American Fredricka ‘Fred’ Oday is invited to become the only girl on the school’s golf team, she can’t say no. This is an opportunity to shine, win a scholarship and go to university, something no one in her family has done.

But Fred’s presence on the team isn’t exactly welcome — especially not to rich golden boy Ryan Berenger, whose best friend was kicked off the team to make a spot for Fred.

But there’s no denying that things are happening between the girl with the killer swing and the boy with the killer smile…

It’s awesome the love interest isn’t perfect. It makes him really realistic that way:)

Her next book about Hopi Indians sounds awesome! It’s great she’ll do research on site:)

    Thank you:)

    Lovely interview:) And review;)

  2. Ahh I can’t believe I haven’t read this book yet! I have been following various tour stops and reviews, however, and it’s really helping build up the anticipation. Thanks for such a great interview (awesome personalized questions and of course, wonderful responses from Liz) and giveaway (:

  3. This book is already on my TBR list, the moment I saw it I wanted to read it. First off, there isn’t many YA books that feature native American teens. Secondly, Fred is playing on a boys golf team. Fred is a girl! I can’t think of any more reasons than the description of this book that I would need … I can’t wait to read this!
Love the author interview! Thank you for the review and giveaway!

  4. This book sounds really good. I think it’s really cool how she came up with the idea. Very random, but pretty awesome. I like that golf is a big part of this. You don’t see many books out there about golf. Also I used to play golf so I like that there is a girl who is really good at it as the MC in the book.

  5. Love that the author’s incorporated golf — it is pretty popular at a lot of high schools, after all. And I do love imperfect guys, too!
