Hi everyone. icon smile Wasteland Blog Tour: Character Profile of Esther and Excerpt Today I have the pleasure of sharing a character profile of Esther and an excerpt from WASTELAND by Laurence Klavan and Susan Kim. I am super excited about this book, and I hope you are, too. icon smile Wasteland Blog Tour: Character Profile of Esther and Excerpt

 Character profile of Esther:

Esther, 15, is thin and watchful, with dark eyes. She’s pretty, but she doesn’t know it; she certainly doesn’t do much about her looks. She has dark hair that she cuts herself, and she always wears jeans and a red hoodie. Esther is full of emotion and impulsive, which she almost always regrets. And she’s incredibly idealistic and would do anything for the people she loves.

Short excerpt featuring Esther:

“The girl drank deeply, the muscles in her throat working. She drank until the bottle was nearly finished, then she pushed it aside and sighed.

‘Thank you,’ she said. She sounded much better, but neither girl was fooled. ‘Where are you headed? You got a home?’

Esther shrugged. ‘I did.’

The girl nodded. ‘It all lasts so short, don’t it. Here and gone. Well’—her eyes flickered to the side, as if to indicate all of the horror that surrounded them—‘there’s a place for you here, if you want it.’

She closed her eyes. Within moments, she was breathing deeply. In sleep, her face was eased of its pain and tension and Esther was surprised to see that she looked her age. She was no more than nine or ten.

Esther got to her feet. Then she put her backpack over her shoulder.

It all lasts so short.

And no matter how bad things were, she was still alive.”

Welcome to the Wasteland. Where all the adults are long gone, and now no one lives past the age of nineteen. Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan’s post-apocalyptic debut is the first of a trilogy in which everyone is forced to live under the looming threat of rampant disease and brutal attacks by the Variants —- hermaphroditic outcasts that live on the outskirts of Prin. Esther thinks there’s more to life than toiling at harvesting, gleaning, and excavating, day after day under the relentless sun, just hoping to make it to the next day. But then Caleb, a mysterious stranger, arrives in town, and Esther begins to question who she can trust. As shady pasts unravel into the present and new romances develop, Caleb and Esther realize that they must team together to fight for their lives and for the freedom of Prin.

  1. I can’t wait to meet Esther Bailey!!! This definitely sounds like a world I would never want to live in, but I love Esther all the more just for surviving in it. Not sure I would be able to!

Thanks so much for being a part of the tour:)

  2. You posted! You posted!

    *Snoopy Dance*

See?! I missed you, Bailey! I love this post. I am enjoying Wasteland, and Esther is a pretty awesome character. I love this insight.

  3. I would like to know more about how the world became a wasteland. I also want to know what killed all the adults. This would be a very interesting story to learn what has happened from Esther’s point of view. Thanks for the excerpt and reviews.

    • Susan Kim says:

We can’t tell how the world came to be the way it is–that would be giving away too much! But it DOES get explained in the second book… we promise!
      Thanks for writing, Kai!

  4. I’d like to know where the authors got their inspiration from! Thanks for the giveaway! :D

      Hi Brad –
We get inspiration from lots of things–our lives, childhoods, stories we’ve heard, books we’ve read, and movies we’ve seen… not to mention everyone we’ve ever met! Making up stories is not only fun for us, it’s a way to make sense of things that bother or intrigue us.
      Thanks! for your question!
