Ashes on the Waves Blog Tour: Special Vlog and Proposal Preview

AshesOnTheWavesBlogTour Ashes on the Waves Blog Tour: Special Vlog and Proposal Preview

Hello readers! I hope you all had a great weekend. I’m super excited to be the first stop on the Ashes on the Waves blog tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Mary Lindsey is a personal friend of mine so it’s so great that I get to be a part of the tour for her second book. She has worked so hard on ASHES ON THE WAVES, and all that blood and sweat shed over this book has paid off. Readers are going to adore her spinoff on Poe’s Annabel Lee poem.

To kick off the tour, I am delighted to be able to share a hilarious video featuring Mary Lindsey and her super awesome publishing team at Penguin. She originally created it for when I featured her on the Authors are Rock Stars blog tour, but she really wanted to get it out there again with ASHES ON THE WAVES actually releasing soon. Message from Mary:
Though the video above was fun, this is how Ashes on the Waves was really pitched to my editor. Originally, it had the working title, Annabel.

I sent a proposal packet to my agent, who then forwarded it to my editor at Philomel. It started with a one-sentence description of the project: “A young adult contemporary gothic novel based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee,” which pretty much sums it up. Then I cited the source work just in case my editor or anyone to which it was pitched was not familiar with Poe’s last poem. (The entire poem in Poe’s handwriting can be read here) The screen shot from the proposal below only includes the first two stanzas of six:

Then, since it is a gothic novel, which entails the setting being a major character in the story, I described the setting and then the characters. Below is about half of the description of one character.

After that came the meat of the proposal: the overview and the outline, which was a detailed three-act breakdown with two proposed endings. Here is a piece of the first page:

After many, many pages of outline, I attached the opening pages of the book to give a feel for the narrative. The style of this book is atypical for a contemporary young adult novel because I wanted to capture, or at least allude to, the gorgeous, descriptive, dramatic atmosphere and style of Poe’s works. Keeping the structure and language contemporary enough to be relatable to modern readers while retaining the Poe feel was the hardest part.
An excerpt from the opening pages I submitted with the proposal is on my website.
By the time I had written the proposal, I was so in love with the project it hurt. I cannot even tell you how exciting it was to get the phone call from my agent telling me that Penguin wanted to publish it.
Thank you so much for offering to kick off the Ashes on the Waves Blog tour, Bailey!

Ashes on the Waves Blog Tour: Special Vlog and Proposal PreviewAbout Ashes on the Waves:

A sexy gothic romance based on Edgar Allan Poe’s “Annabel Lee”

Liam MacGregor is cursed. Haunted by the wails of fantastical Bean Sidhes and labeled a demon by the villagers of Dòchas, Liam has accepted that things will never get better for him—until a wealthy heiress named Annabel Leighton arrives on the island and Liam’s fate is changed forever.

With Anna, Liam finally finds the happiness he has always been denied, but the violent, mythical Otherworlders, who inhabit the island and the sea around it, have other plans. They make a wager on the couple’s love, testing its strength through a series of cruel obstacles. But the tragedies draw Liam and Anna even closer. Frustrated, the creatures put the couple through one last trial—and this time it’s not only their love that’s in danger of being destroyed.

Based on Edgar Allan Poe’s chilling poem Annabel Lee, with references to many of his other works including The Raven, Mary Lindsey creates a frighteningly beautiful gothic novel that glorifies the power of true love.

Perfect for fans of Lauren Kate’s Fallen series, Kendra Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood, and Kelly Creagh’s Nevermore.
