Guest Post: Earthbound by Aprilynne Pike
Hi everyone! Whew! It’s been forever since I last posted on here. My summer has been crazy and I can’t believe that it’s almost over.
ANYWAYS, I am super excited to be a part of Penguin Teen’s Earthbound blog tour. Aprilynne has a super fun and insightful post about her yummy character Quinn that I am happy to be revealing to you! Enjoy.
I love Quinn. Quinn Avery. And today I get to tell your readers a bit about him. A very little bit, I admit. Because the mystery of Quinn . . . well, it’s a very big part of the story of Earthbound. Maybe the best way to tell you about Quinn is to tell you three things the Quinn definitely is not:
1.) Quinn is not insane. I know, I know, that seems like a really weird thing to have to clarify right off the bat. But trust me. He’s not. He is . . . a bit quirky. But reserve judgment. Like a good BBQ ribs, some things just need some time to turn out right.
2.) Quinn is not a jerk. You’re really excited about this guy now, aren’t you? At the very least, he’s not nearly as big a jerk as he sometimes appears to be. It’s not his fault; he’s a bit displaced. He’s really not to blame for the things he says. (No really, you’ll think this is funny after you’ve read the book.)
3.) Quinn is not Edward Cullen. That’s just all I’m going to say about that.
Quinn was so fun to write for two reasons. The first is that he is a manly-man. This guy practically oozes masculinity, and on top of that he’s rather the strong silent type, and I got a kick out of how annoyed Tavia’s often gets because of that. Secondly, Quinn is so very out of his element, more than anyone else in the entire book. Entire series, really. And there is no solution. I can’t fix it or even help him adjust. He just . . . is.
However, despite his faults, he is pretty eye-catching, so I’ll close with a more . . . physical tidbit of Quinn.
“Hey!” I snap, folding my arms across my chest. “Are you even listening to me?”
He reaches for another rock and I move in front of him to block his throw.
“You can’t just—” I look down at his face and my words cut off.
It’s the most beautiful face I’ve ever seen.
Leaf-green eyes look up at me with a calm as deep as the waters of Lake Michigan. His jaw is angular, but the curve of his mouth softens the lines and his sooty lashes do the rest. As I drink him in, a strand of golden hair slips loose from behind his ear and casts a dark shadow across his cheek. Air hisses into my mouth in a gasp, and though I’m trying to form words, my mouth doesn’t obey.”
Tavia immediately searches for answers, desperate to determine why she feels so drawn to a boy she hardly knows. But when Tavia discovers that the aunt and uncle who took her in after her parents’ death may have actually been responsible for the plane crash that killed them–and that she may have been the true intended victim–she flees for the safety of Camden, Maine, where the boy she sees in her visions instructs her to go.
Now, Tavia is on the run with no one to trust. No one, that is, except for her best friend and longtime crush, Benson. Tavia feels torn between the boy who mysteriously comes to her at night and the boy who has been by her side every step of the way. But what Tavia doesn’t know is that the world is literally falling apart and that to save it she will have to unite with the boy in her visions. Only problem? To do so would mean rejecting Benson’s love. And that’s the one thing Tavia Michaels swore she’d never do.
Aprilynne Pike’s #1 New York Times best-selling debut, WINGS, is the first of four books about a seemingly ordinary girl with a not-so-ordinary destiny. In this tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever…
